Missed chances cost Benfleet…
It was a stinking hot day at Woodside, Prophet won the toss and decided to put the opposition into bat … missed chance number one!
Despite claiming an early victim it was clear from the outset that the track was flatter than a hedgehog after a night out on the M25. The two lads from Billericay played well but we missed chances to dismiss both before they reached fifty – chances on another day we will take. Who knows what they’d have got had we clung onto those - I suspect at least 30 or 40 less. Head went down a bit a times and the general standard of fielding was lower than we expect.
Chasing 258 was never going to be easy but the early signs were promising with a fluent and rapid start provided by Tremers (39) and Dave (22). Both looked in great form and had us up to the 50 mark within 10 overs. Having lost a wicket, we lost 4 more in quick succession putting us at 80 odd for 5 – not looking so good anymore. Scotty (79 not out) and Sean (33) then batted beautifully adding nearly a hundred runs, seeing us past 200 and drawing the match.
Billericay are a good side but so are we and unfortunately let ourselves down in some areas….. More positively, we have shown that we have depth and quality to our batting, our bowlers have shown signs of form to come, our fielding will improve and we will not be easy for anyone to beat.
Next week Old Brentwoods at their place. We will improve as a team and I’m confident that we will claim that all important first victory.
